Science Museum Oklahoma Seeks Used Shoes for 'Sole Expression' Art Installation

October 13, 2016

Oklahoma City metro residents are invited to leave their footprint on “Sole Expression: The Art of the Shoe,” an upcoming installation in Science Museum Oklahoma’s smART Space, with the donation of a used pair of shoes.

Donated footwear of all kinds and from all ages — from athletic shoes, sandals, loafers and high heels to slippers, boots, and snow shoes — that are associated with a particular memory or experience are encouraged. Shoes should be accompanied by a note that describes their significance, no matter how big or small.

“Certain objects can spark memories, especially shoes. The purpose behind the installation is to express that there are very few things made by people that we interact with as intimately as our footwear,” said Scott Henderson, director of smART Space at SMO.

Henderson noted that shoes associated with any experience are welcome — whether running shoes worn in a first marathon, a pair of worn out work boots, or sandals that saw a summer of fun.

“Our shoes are simultaneously a means of self-expression and a vehicle that connects us with the work, people and play that makes up our daily lives. Footwear intrinsically marries art and design in a medium that not only everyone is familiar with, but also has a personal relationship with.”

Donated shoes and their accompanying stories will be on display in smART Space beginning in early 2017 through 2018. Shoes may be dropped off at the museum’s front desk during regular business hours. Contributors will be asked to complete a brief contact form. The deadline for submissions is Jan. 7, 2017.
