Science Museum Oklahoma invites guests to experience the intersection of art and science in Spin! The Art of the Modern Zoetrope, now open in the museum’s smART Space galleries. The exhibition opened Aug. 1, will be available for one year, and is included at no additional charge with museum admission.

Spin! The Art of the Modern Zoetrope brings together eight world-renowned artists who reimagined one of animation’s earliest inventions. The zoetrope is a 19th-century device that creates the illusion of motion through innovative use of lights, sculptures, drawings and perspective. Its use of rapid sequencing of slightly different images is considered a direct precursor to modern film.

Guests of all ages will discover hands-on experiences and unique works of art that demystify the science behind motion, perception, vision persistence, and animation.

“Art and science work hand-in-hand to help us better understand the world around us,” said Sherry Marshall, John E. Kirkpatrick President and CEO of Science Museum Oklahoma. “Spin! The Art of the Modern Zoetrope demonstrates their inherent connection by combining creativity, technology, and scientific discovery in ways that are both beautiful and interactive.”

Spin! The Art of the Modern Zoetrope is included with museum admission and will be on display through August 2027.
