What started at a summer camp at Omniplex has grown into a deep appreciation of learning and ultimately more than three decades of leadership in science education. Sherry Marshall, John E. Kirkpatrick President and CEO of Science Museum Oklahoma, has now been elected to the Board of Directors for the Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC), the international association representing more than 600 science centers, museums, and organizations in more than 35 countries.

Marshall will begin her first three-year term Sept. 19, and join science museum leaders from across the world in helping guide the association and advance the public’s engagement with science.

For Marshall, this position builds on more than three decades spent making science accessible and engaging to communities in Oklahoma.

She began her career at Science Museum Oklahoma in 1994 as a museum educator. She went on to lead the museum’s programs and outreach before being named president and CEO in 2016.

“The impact that museums have on people’s lives is real, and I am living proof. Science museums provide the unique opportunity for people to see science as something that belongs in their community and a part of their everyday lives,” Marshall said. “We get to create places where people feel comfortable asking questions, trying something new, and following their curiosity. I’m honored to be included alongside leaders from around the world who believe in the power of that work.”

Marshall has long contributed to shaping science museums and science education. She currently serves on the Oklahoma Museums Association Board and chairs the Museum and Science Center Committee for the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions. She has presented for organizations including ASTC, the European Network of Science Centres and Museums, the American Chemical Society, the Obama Foundation, and Disney Institute.

“ASTC is grateful for Sherry’s service and commitment,” said Christofer Nelson, ASTC’s President and CEO. “Members of the Board of Directors—each distinguished leaders—bring tremendous insight and important perspectives on our field as we work together to increase understanding of an engagement with science and technology among all people.”
